Thailand’s Parliament Sets July 13 Vote to Select Prime Minister

Thailand will hold a joint session of its parliament on July 13 to elect a prime minister, almost two months after a group of pro-democracy parties swept the May election.

The lawmakers will convene for the vote at 9:30 a.m. next Thursday, Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, newly-elected speaker of the House of Representatives, told reporters on Wednesday.

The 750-member joint chamber of parliament, which includes senators, is expected to vote on pro-democracy coalition’s candidate Pita Limjaroenrat. Although Pita’s coalition commands a clear majority of 312 lawmakers in the lower house, he still needs to obtain the support of the majority of the National Assembly.
