China Vice President Sees ‘Positive Signals’ in Ties With US

Recent high-level meetings have helped improve the China-US relationship, a top official in Beijing said before an expected meeting between Xi Jinping and Joe Biden next week.

The talks “have sent out positive signals and raised the expectations of the international community on the improvement of China-US relations,” Vice President Han Zheng said Wednesday at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore.

The comments come after US sent at least four cabinet-level officials to Beijing since June. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also traveled to Washington in late October to meet Biden and other top officials.

The remarks also underscore the recent improvement in ties between the two nations, which have been feuding over Taiwan, restrictions on tech transfers and spying issues. Xi is set to attend a dinner with top US business executives when he visits San Francisco for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit next week, according to people familiar with the matter.

He is also expected to meet Biden for their first talks in more than a year on the sidelines of the event.

Han added that the US and China can find a way to get along, saying that “the world is big enough for the two countries to develop themselves and prosper together.”

“A stable and sound China-US relationship is the common expectation of all sectors in our two countries and the international community as a whole,” he said. “We’re ready to strengthen communication and dialogue with the United states at all levels.”
